Writing is something I came to later in life. I always found it difficult to constrain my thoughts and ideas within writing and struggled to succinctly encapsulate all my ideas about something into a concise narrative. As I reflect upon this, I think I’ve always understood narratives to be the stories we tell ourselves and/or are told to us. That the power of narratives influence so much of how we understand and process the world. I understand now that without narrative there is no learning, it is the stories we tell ourselves that shape our identities both individually and communally.
As I learn and evolve as a writing mentor I look back at this journey, the stories told to me, the stories I’ve told myself, and wanting to help others find their own voice. How these narratives can shape and ultimately be reshaped into a narrative that empowers others to find their own voice and narrative understanding of themselves. There have been a lot of narratives about myself I have believed for decades, stemming from dyslexia and undiagnosed neurodivergence, to existing as a non-binary being an a world that insists upon binary narratives.
As I work towards rewriting my own narrative, I wish to share that journey and empower others to begin crafting their own narratives about themselves and finding their own voice and to be brave enough to share their stories and points of view in their own writing.
