Most of my early writing was in poetic form. The lack of constraints and formal process was encouraging for me as someone who struggled with formal literacy. I found that I could weave a story through allegory and narrative to convey a message and not have to worry to much about how it would be interpreted. I wrote a lot of poems and poetry over the years much of it lost to the sands of time as I was never brave enough to work towards having anything published. I was petrified with perfectionism and fear of judgement. Aliments I continue to struggle with today.
However, as I look back I can see how even in that medium, the importance and power of conveying ideas and putting them out into the world. But writing and expression is an act of social bravery, it is putting yourself out there to be judged. I am still working on overcoming this fear, and will share some of the poems I’ve written over the years. I will always struggle with grammar and the finer points of proper literacy, but we shouldn’t let fear stop us from expressing ourselves, even if we’re wrong. And so as part of my literacy narrative I share here some of my own poems I’ve never been brave enough to share or publish.
