Learning to Believe in Myself –

This new understanding and ability to engage in the written word allowed me to join a few high school friends as we created our own farcical (unauthorized) newsletter that we would write and publish weekly for distribution. We were doing The Onion before knowing about The Onion. It was a great way to express ideas and just make jokes about our lives and observations.

Here are some old farcical articles I used to write but never really had the courage to share…

I still struggled with efficiency in my writing, but the newsletter did give me my first real taste at writing and sharing my ideas and gave me more confidence to write and share the things I thought. It also lead me to discovering other farcical and comedic stories and writings which I began to devour as well. I would learn that I could use writing to comment on the things I see around me and frame them in comedic or narrative ways to challenge the general assumptions about the stories we ingest.

Eventually I would take this to the stage and tried my hand at stand up comedy. Something I had to quit for personal reasons, but still miss and continually think about starting up again. Though stand up was one of the first instances where I would work with others as we all wrote and crafted jokes, trying to find the right phrasing and structure to really make a joke land. I’d include some of my stand up, but some of the language is not suitable.
