So what was this all about? Literacy and narrative is about telling a story. Trying to make sense of the world in which we live. As a writing mentor I want to impart on those I mentor the ability to think freely and expressively, to challenge and engage with the narratives they’ve been told and tell themselves. That sharing who you are and your thoughts is a daunting task riddled with potential judgment and embarrassment. I will always struggle with spelling and grammar and will be forever grateful for spellcheck and other assistance tools. I am learning that my story matters, and what I have to say about something is valuable, and helping others find their own perspective is valuable too.
As a mentor I wish to impart these lessons on those who wish to find and empower their own voice and rewrite their own narrative. Whatever the medium, literacy is important in conveying our experiences and understandings into the world. As a writing mentor, I want to empower others with the confidence to tell their own stories and write their own narratives as I learn to do the same for myself.
